Buncombe County Arts Business Damage Assessment Reveals $14.8M in Losses After Hurricane Helene
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Buncombe County’s arts businesses have reported devastating losses. A recent survey conducted by ArtsAVL reveals that 208 local arts businesses—spanning both nonprofit and for-profit sectors—suffered an estimated $14.85 million in revenue losses between September 26 and December 31, 2024. This includes widespread structural damage, loss of inventory, business closures, and significant disruptions to operations.
Key findings from the November 2024 Arts Business Assessment include:
- 71.6% of respondents were for-profit businesses, with the largest concentration in the River Arts District and Downtown Asheville.
- 24 businesses reported being completely destroyed, with another 29 reporting significant damage.
- Only 28% of arts businesses are currently fully open, while 35% remain closed but plan to reopen.
- Beyond property damage, businesses are grappling with canceled events, lost tourism revenue, utility outages, staff layoffs, and mental health challenges.
- Critical reopening needs include financial aid, infrastructure repairs, marketing support, and assistance transitioning to e-commerce.
Despite immense challenges, the survey also highlights a resilient and collaborative spirit. Many business owners praised local efforts, including support from ArtsAVL and other partners. However, the report calls for expanded disaster relief, more accessible funding, and continued advocacy to ensure a full recovery for the region’s creative sector.
This assessment is a critical step in tracking Hurricane Helene’s impact and shaping future recovery strategies for Western North Carolina’s arts economy.
