2023 Creative Economy Snapshot: A Data-Driven Look at Buncombe County’s Arts and Culture Sector
The 2023 Creative Economy Snapshot provides a focused analysis of Buncombe County’s arts-forward economy, revealing the vital role creative industries play in the region’s economic and cultural landscape. Commissioned by Buncombe County Government and compiled by Riverbird Research using Lightcast data, the report estimates earnings, sales, and employment across 56 industry sectors and 66 occupations using NAICS and SOC codes.
In 2023, the creative economy in Buncombe County generated $385.5 million in earnings, marking a 9.2% increase from 2022, and $1.09 billion in sales. Employment in creative fields also rose, with 8,996 jobs reported, a 3% year-over-year increase.
The top-earning and top-selling industry was Historical Sites, followed by Independent Artists, Writers, and Performers, Commercial Printing, Graphic Design Services, and Arts Dealers. On the occupational side, the most common creative roles included Photographers, Writers and Authors, Musicians and Singers, Fine Artists, and Graphic Designers.
The snapshot also highlights workforce demographics:
- Race/Ethnicity: 73% White, 10% Black or African American, 8% Hispanic or Latino
- Gender: 52% Female, 48% Male
- Age Distribution: Largest groups were ages 35–64 (62%)
ArtsAVL’s approach to defining the creative economy centers around six arts-based categories: performing, visual, craft, literary, media, and interdisciplinary arts. By aligning with these mediums, the snapshot focuses on industries and occupations most relevant to local arts policy and support.
