The Economic Power of Arts in Buncombe County
Based on the Arts & Economic Prosperity III National Study
Buncombe County’s vibrant arts and culture sector is more than a source of inspiration—it’s a powerful economic engine. As part of Americans for the Arts’ landmark Arts & Economic Prosperity III study, Buncombe County contributed to the most comprehensive analysis of the nonprofit arts and culture industry’s economic impact ever conducted in the United States.
This national report, which includes participation from the Asheville Area Arts Council, documents how investments in arts and culture strengthen local economies. Nationally, the nonprofit arts and culture sector generated $166.2 billion in economic activity in 2005, supporting 5.7 million jobs and producing nearly $30 billion in government revenue.
In Buncombe County, local arts organizations and audiences played a significant role in this economic growth. Their collective spending ripples throughout the region—supporting jobs, attracting cultural tourists, and generating income for small businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and retail shops. On average, each attendee at a cultural event spent an additional $27.79 beyond the cost of admission—spending that directly benefits the local economy.
As one of the 156 communities selected for the study, Buncombe County’s participation underscores its leadership in recognizing and advancing the role of the arts in economic development. The findings demonstrate that investing in the arts is not a luxury, but a smart economic strategy—fueling job creation, household income, and public revenue.
The message is clear: The arts mean business. And in Buncombe County, they are vital to a thriving, resilient, and culturally rich community.
