Western North Carolina artists of all disciplines substantially impacted by Hurricane Helene are invited to apply for ArtsAVL Emergency Relief Grant. The grant provides $500 relief stipends to arts professionals working in craft, literary, media, performing, visual, and interdisciplinary arts.

This regional grant is open to arts professionals 18 years or older in Western North Carolina counties impacted by Hurricane Helene, including Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey.

Grant Guidelines

Eligibility

  • Applicants must currently reside in one of the 26 impacted counties, and be 18 years of age or older.
  • Applicants must be activity working in one of the following artistic fields: craft, literary, media, performing, visual, and interdisciplinary arts
  • Applicants must have been substantially impacted by Hurricane Helene.
  • This grant is intended for individual artists; nonprofits are not eligible for this opportunity.
  • Due to the high volume of need, awardees will not be eligible to apply again until further notice.

Selection Criteria & Process

Applications for the ArtsAVL Emergency Relief Grant are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and are subject to approval and available funds. We do not guarantee any applicant a grant. Applications will be reviewed to ensure that the applicant:

  1. Is a verified resident of one of the 26 WNC counties impacted by Hurricane Helene;
  2. Has a legitimate artistic practice; and
  3. Has been substantially impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Additionally, staff will also take into account other demographic considerations as outlined in the application form.

Grant notification timing will vary depending on the volume of applications and time needed for review, and any required follow up questions. These grants are meant to provide immediate relief, so we will process them as quickly as we can.

Those that are selected for funding will be asked to sign a short grant agreement (via DocuSign) that includes their payment details and the completion of a w-9 form.

Relief stipends may be used in any way towards your recovery efforts. Receipts and reporting will not be required at this time. Emergency Relief Grants from ArtsAVL are considered non-taxable grants/gifts. The IRS does not require us to provide a Form 1099. We recommend that grant recipients consult with an accountant to ensure you are compliant in reporting taxable income.
