WNC Arts Relief: Hurricane Helene’s Impact on the Creative Economy and the Road to Recovery

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on Western North Carolina, ArtsAVL launched a comprehensive relief and recovery effort to support the region’s creative economy. The storm caused over $53 billion in damages statewide and destroyed more than 250 artist studios, galleries, and venues in Asheville’s River Arts District alone—80% of the district. With tourism revenue plummeting and unemployment spiking, the need for targeted recovery in the arts sector is urgent.

The WNC Arts Relief initiative outlines a four-phase strategy: assessment and advocacy, relief aid and support, getting artists and businesses back to work, and long-term sector recovery. So far, over 2,300 artists and 200+ arts businesses have been surveyed to assess needs, with financial support, job retention, and temporary workspace emerging as top priorities.

ArtsAVL is distributing emergency grants, offering free technical assistance through Mountain BizWorks’ Craft Your Commerce program, and advocating for arts inclusion in broader recovery efforts. As the region rebuilds, the arts will be essential to restoring cultural tourism, supporting local economies, and preserving WNC’s unique creative identity.
